Hello Sarah, with an h,
Well, it says that the ratio is 3 black for every 5 red. And, there is a total of 16 pieces left.
What we need to do is find equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same portion. For, example 2/5 , 4/10,
6/15, 4/20 are equivalent to each other. How?
Take for example 2/5. If you multiply the numerator and the denominator by, let's say 3, you get 6/15. If you the numerator and the denominator of 2/ 5 and multiply them by 2, you get 4/10. So, in order to find an equivalent fraction you must multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number.
Ok, our ratio (fraction) is 3/5. Fractions equivalent to 3/5 will be 6/10, 9/15, 12/20 and so on. Now, remember that 3/5 means that 3 black/ 5 red. We need to find an equivalent fraction so that when we add the red and the black will add up to 16. This will be 6/10, that is six black and ten red. Note that 6/10 is the same portion as 3/5, just divide by 2 to see it.
Well, Sarah that's your answer six black and ten red. Thanks for posting your question, and I hope this helps you out.
