Jim’s age is 4 more than 3 times his daughter’s age. Five years ago Jim’s age was 4 more than 5 times his daughter’s age. Determine their ages now.

J = 3D + 4
J - 5 = 5(D - 5) + 4, so, J = 5D - 16
Set equal to each other:
3D + 4 = 5D - 16
20 = 2D
D = 10, J = 34
