Video Store A charges $9 to rent a video game for one week. Although only members can rent from the store, membership is free. Video Store B charges only $4 to rent a video game for one week. Only members can rent from the store and membership is $50 per year. After how many rentals will the total amount spent at each store be the same? What will be the total amount spent at each store

N is the # of video games that are rented

 

9N = 50 + 4N

 

9N - 4N = 50

 

5N = 50

 

N=10

 

10 video games....

the price is $90 at the first store

and 50 + 4*10 = 50 + 40 = 90 at the 2nd store

 

Until then, the first store is cheaper

Store A, the cost is 9x

store B, the cost is 4x + 50

set them equal to find when they will be the same

9x = 4x + 50

subtract 4x from each side

5x=50

divide both sides by 5

x=10

when there are 10 rentals, a person has spent $90 at either store.
