If y is directly proportional to x, then there is a constant, k, such that:
y = kx
So, if y = 8 when x = 3, then
8 = 3k
k = 8/3
So the constant of proportionality is 8/3 and the formula is
y = (8/3)x

Then you would substitute y = 17 for y = (8/3)x
17 = (8/3)x
divide both sides by 8/3
17/(8/3) = x
17 x (3/8) = x
51/8 = x
x = 51/8 or 6 3/8
