Usually this problem has a little more information. It looks like it got cut off, before copying the full problem
Two schools, A and B, rent 9 vans and 9 cars for their students
each van can take 30 students. each car can take 8 students
There are a total of 300 students in School A, 70 in school B, for a grand total of 372 students
Will they all fit?
30 x 9 = 270 students in the 9 vans
8 x 9 = 72 students in the 9 cars
for a total of 270+72 = 342
372 - 342 = 30 students won't have transportation
they need to rent one more van or leave 30 students behind
or depending on the rental prices of the vans and cars, they could also rent 4 more cars, 3 would be full and the 4th with room for 2 more students.
but the problem says "separate" trips to New York.
That means all 300 of A's school's students will be in separate vans or cars. 30 x 10 vans would transport them all
8 x 9 cars would transport all 70 students from high school B
