Question

Paula has read 70% of the total pages in a book she is reading in English class Paula has read 84 pages. Define a variable. Then write and solve an equation to determine how many pages are in the book.

let p be the number of pages in the entire book. If she read 70% of the book, that means she read .70p.

But the second sentence said she read 84 pages. Well that means these 2 quantities must be equal....so,

.70p = 84

 

p = 120 

So the entire book must have 120 pages.
