Physics (and math) are fun, really
Hi Sheridan,
We are looking for all the positive integers (whole numbers) whose product is 16 right? So can you state that using symbols? Suppose we let a represent the first integer and b represent the second then we have
a*b=16 and we are looking for all the solutions to this equation. Suppose we let a=1 then b must be 16 because 1*16=16 right? Next what if a=2 then b must be 16/2=8 and 2*8=16. Now let a=3 now we have a problem because there is no integer that when multiplied by 3 is equal to 16. With a=4 we have b=4 right? a=5 oops no solution same with a=6 and a=7, But when a=8 b=1 works. When a>(greater than) 8 there are no whole numbers that work, for instance if a=9 the b=16/9 not a whole number.
Hope this helps
Jim
