When you have two equations with two unknowns you can solve for both by substitution.
2x+4y=7
y=5-7x
Therefore, sub the value of y in equation 2 into the first equation
2x+4(5-7x)=7
2x+20-28x=7
-26x=-13
x=1/2 or 0.5
and y can be solved now
y=5-7(0.5)
y=1.5
