how do I solve xy=x/y for y

How do I solve this?

xy = x/y    Multiply both sides by y  

xy² = x      Divide both sides by x

y² = 1       Take the square root of both sides

y = + 1

This is called a literal equation... 

xy=x/y

first multiply both sides by y, you want the variable y to be by itself, or isolate it.

 Y(xy)= (x/y)y

(y^2)x= (xy)/y, on the right side of the equation, the y's cancel out. So you end up with

 

(y^2)x= x, divide both sides by x

y^2= 1

then take the square root of both sides

y= +/- 1
