A woman has a total of $8,000 to invest. She invests part of the money in an account that pays 8% per year and the rest in an account that pays 10% per year. If the interest earned in the first year is $660, how much did she invest in each account?

0.08a + 0.1b = 660

 

a = 8000 - b

0.08(8000 - b) + 0.1b = 660

640 - 0.08b + 0.1b = 660

0.02b = 20

b = 1000

 

a = 8000 - 1000

a = 7000
