I have an assignment that is 10% of my mark and I didn’t hand it in. My exam is worth 20% and I’m currently at 62%. If I do somewhat good on the exam (more than a 50%) will I pass? A passing mark is 50%.

Let's solve the equation for the final mark of your class.

 

Final mark = Mark on Assignment * weight of assignment + Mark on Final Exam * weight of Final + Mark of current class * weight of current class

 

Final mark = 0 * .1 + Mark on Final  Exam* .2 + .62 * .7

Final mark = Mark on Final Exam* .2 + .434

Solve for Mark on Final Exam

Mark on Final Exam* .2 = Final mark - .434

Mark on Final Exam = (Final mark - .434)/.2

We want Final mark to be greater than 50% so we set Final mark at 50%

Mark on Final Exam = (.5-.434)/.2

Mark on Final Exam = 33%

So, as long as your mark on the final is greater than 33% and even though you didn't hand in 10% of your final mark, you will score above  50%.
