For 16 teams, 16*16 -16 = 16*(16-1) = 16*15 = 240

the first team plays 2 games with the other 15 teams for a total of 30 games

the second team plays 2 games with only 14 teams because the second team already played the first team twice, therefore the second team plays 28 games

the third team plays 2 games with only 13 teams because the third team already played the first two teams, therefore the third team plays 26 games

continue the pattern until the next to last team plays only 2 games with the last team and the last team has already played everybody else

28+4=32

26+6=32
