What does ^ mean in math?

I always see online tutors using the '^' symbol and can't find the meaning of it.

This is a sign for an exponential problem,and in some cases it can be used in multiplication problems, especially on the computer.

It usually means exponentiation.  Example:

 

3² = 3^2 = 9

 

When editing an already saved math solution, it may be easier to use "^" instead of exponentiation.  Also, software writers usually use "^" as a symbol for exponentiation.
