A "consecutive number" means that one number follows another, such as 1, 2, and 3.   They have a "sum" of -27. This means that you add the consecutive numbers together to get -27.

Let the first number=x,      2nd number= x+1 ,   3rd number= x+2    It is usually set up this way.

 

x+ (x+1)  +(x+2)=-27     Remember that x=1x     Now add all numbers and like variables together. 

 

Then solve for "x"   (Note:  "x" is the value of the first number,  x+1=2nd number, etc.)

These are very easy! Think about any number in the world -- well, okay, just integers. The next consecutive number appears when you add, as does the next and the next and...

So: start with the unknown first number, the prepare the two successive numbers:

First:      X

Second:  X + 1

Third:      X + 1 + 1  = X + 2

"Sum" of course means "add, which gives us:

X + X + 1 X + 2 = -27

        3X + 3       = -27

              -3            -3

         3X            =  -30

         3X / 3       = -30 / 3

           X            =  -10

Plug this value into that list up top:

First:           -10

Second:       -10 + 1  =  -9

Third:           -10 + 2  =  -8
