Patrick, you need to review what one square mile is.  It could be a square, with all sides measuring one mile in length, or the same area could be a rectangle, one half mile by two miles in its side (L & W) lengths.

 

 

Now consider a circle having radius r=1 mile.  Its area is pi square miles, i.e. about 3.1416 sq mi--even though the shape is circular.
