Some students went on a field trip. Of the 24 girls in the class, 5/8 of them went on the trip. How many girls went on the school trip?

Put 24 over 1 making it a fraction.  Then you can either multiply 24 X 5 and then divide by 8 or cross out:  24/1 X 5/8.  Eight can go into 24.  So cross out 8 and put 1 (8 divided by 8=1).  Then 24 divide by 8 is 3.
