x2 + 2x - 24
 
To see if this is factorable check for factors of -24 that add to 2:
6(-4) = -24 ... 6-4 = 2
So the factors needed are 6 and -4
 
x2 + 2x - 24 = (x+6)(x-4)
 
The zeroes are x = -6 and x = 4

I suppose the student really meant to say
 
x2 + 2x - 24
 
instead of
 
x + 2x - 24.
