4x - 7
 
"is equal to" ... = 
"twice the number" ... 2x
"increased by three" ... + 3
= 2x + 3
 
4x - 7 = 2x + 3
 
sbtract 2x from both sides
 
2x - 7 = 3
 
add 7 to both sides
 
2x = 10
 
divide both sides by 2
 
x = 5
