is 20 more than twice the number:  = 2x + 20

 

4x = 2x + 20

subtract 2x from both sides

2x = 20

divide both sides by 2

x = 10

 

Check:  4(10) = 2(10) + 20

            40 = 20 + 20

            40 = 40
