I love math, and I love to teach it.
Hello, Iris,
Note: slope-intercept form: y=mx +b m=slope and b= y-intercept, where line crosses y-axis
Perpendicular to another line means that one line will cross another line making a 90 degree angle
1. Find the slope of the perpendicular line: Look at the slope of the line given m= (1/2)
negative reciprocal m=(-2/1)
2. Write equation of the perpendicular line in slope-intercept form: y= -2x +b.
(x,y)
3. Now use the given point (-2,2) to find the "b" value. 2=-2(-2) +b. So, 2= 4 +b
4. Just subtract 4 from both sides, and you'll have the value of "b."
5. Use y=mx +b, and substitute values for "m" and "b," and you are done!
I hope that this example helps. I'll let you finish this one on your own. Susan C.
