Newton's First Law, the Law of Inertia, states:
- An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an external force
- An object moving in a straight line at constant speed will remain moving in a straight line at constant speed unless acted upon by an external force
Hence inertia is the property of NOT changing your state of motion unless acted upon by a force.
