make a number line with positive numbers to the right and negatives to the left.

 

start at -7, to the left of the 0 point, then subtract 2 by moving 2 more to the left (negative) of that. so now you're at negative 9. then to add the 8, move 8 spaces toward the right (positive) side--you'll end up at -1 for your answer.
