there were 5 cars racing in the a one hundred mile classic car race. The duesenberg finished 12 seconds ahead of the edsel. The studebaker finished 7 seconds behind the model t ford. the time from when the first finisher crossed the line to the last finisher was 22 seconds. the pierce arrow finished 14 seconds after the model t ford. the edsel came in third place. List the cars in the order in which they completed the race, and the times between them from the first to fifth places. And provide an explanation.

Studebaker = x + 7

Pierce = x + 14

 

let time for edsel  = y

Duesenberg = y - 12

 

Because the duesenberg came in before the edsel, we can't place the edsel between the Studebaker and pierce because then it would come in fourth but it actually came in third. So it must fall between the ModelT Ford and the Studebaker. Because the Pierce came in fifth, it's time is 22 seconds. Because Duesenberg came in first, it's time is 0.

 

So the order and times are as follows:

 

Duesenberg    0 sec

Model T Ford   8 sec

Edsel             12 sec

Studebaker    15 sec

Pierce            22 sec
