ACT Blues? No Sweat! I've Got the Inside Scoop!
$3.50X + $5.50X +$6.00 = $$51.00
X represents the number of people in the family. In order to solve for X you first subtract $6 from each side to cancel it (because you want to get X all by itself)
$3.50X + $5.50X + $6.00 - $6.00 = $51.00 - $6.00
$3.50X + $5.50X = $45.00
Now all you have to do is combine "like terms." Since both of your terms have X as a variable, you can just add them together.
$9.00X = $45.00
Remember that your goal is to get X by itself because it represents the number of family members. In order to do that you would divide both sides by 9
$9.00X = $45.00
9.00 = 9.00
X = 5 family members
If you plug 5 back into the original equation you should get $51
