Hi Jem,
This problem uses one variable which is Joshua's salary. Because it's our unknown, let's call his salary s. Now we have 2 more things to do: write the equation and solve for s. To write the equation, we are just going to translate the words into algebraic symbols. Remember that of means multiplication.
- 1/6 of his salary is (1/6) times s = s/6 when we remember our fraction multiplication rules.
- 1/10 of the remainder is (1/10)(s-(s/6)). This may look confusing so we need to simplify and remember our adding and subtracting rules for fractions. s-(s/6) has different denominators so we need a common denominator. Our least common denominator (LCD) is 6 and we have to convert 1s to a fraction. So we now have (6s/6)-(s/6) and can subtract the numerators which leaves us with 5s/6. Now our expression looks like this: (1/10)(5s/6) = 5s/60. Since 60 and 5 have a greatest common factor of 5, we can reduce and it becomes s/12.
- Gave $650 will just be $650
- 1/3 of his salary is (1/3)s =s/3
