This may not sound familiar, but think of what you do know.

Length * width = area

Okay so far?  Now, put in what the problem gives you.

12 * w = 228

12w = 228    Does that look familar?  You want to isolate w, so what do you do?

I'll leave this one for you and work a similar problem.

14w = 238    Divide both sides by 14

w = 17
