Raisins and sunflower seeds are sold together in packages of 250 g. The ratio of the mass of raisins to the mass of sunflower seeds is 3 to 5. Determine the mass of raisins in a package.

Let R = grams of raisins in package

 

     S  = grams of sunflower seeds in package

 

1)   R  +  S  =  250 grams

 

2)  R/S = 3/5     or   5*R = 3*S   or    R = (3/5)*S

 

2 equations and 2 unkowns

 

Substitute equation 2) into equation 1) and solve for S:

 

(3/5)*S + S  = 250          (combine like terms)

 

(8/5)*S = 250

 

S  =  (5/8)*250  = 156.25 grams sunflower seeds

 

R = 250 - S  =  250 - 156.25  =   93.75 grams of raisins in a package
