Writing without fractional indicies?

so i was fine with q's like y 1/3, y 2/3
 
but then it got confusing because i don't know the full formula and how to apply it properly eg. this was tricky.

Sure, Mark.  I just think that the provision for an index in a radical looks a little peculiar on this platform, inasmuch as it isn't clearly within the 'notch.'  But it's a good idea to try to show it symbolically to supplement my verbiage.
