kevin and randy muise have a jar containing 40 coins all of which are quarters or nickels. the total value of the coins in the jar is $6.60 how many of each type of coin do they have?

Total number of coins=40 (they are either quarters or nickels),

How many quarters Unknown: x

How many nickels? Unknown: y

BUT x+y=40  (we have one equation) 

Now we need one more equation  to find x and y.

What we know is the total amount: $6.60= 660 cents

25x+10y=660

So we have the following system of two linear equations

x+y=40

25x+10y=660,

which you have to solve. I guess(at least I hope) you can do that.
