Imagine you were viewing a human body from the side. If you "cut" them down the middle (coronal plane) then you would notice that the vertebral column is behind the heart. If something is behind another object then it is "posterior". If you flipped this question the answer would be opposite, "the heart is anterior to the vertebral column".
