You know parallel lines have the same slope. Therefore our equation is y = 3x+ b

ug in the point coordinates to get 2 = 3(-1) + b

2 = -3 + b

b = 5

 

our equation is y = 3x + 5

 

or we can do it this way

 

y - 2 = 3(x + 1)

y - 2 = 3x + 3

y = 3x + 5
