What is the answer of this question.

A 120 foot rope is cut into 3 pieces.The first piece of the rope is twice as long as the second piece of rope.The third piece of rope is three time as long as the second piece of rope.What is the longest piece of rope.
a 20 feet
b 40 feet
c 60 feet
d 80 feet

Michael P.

Assume F = first piece of rope length, ft
            S = second piece of rope length, ft
            T = third piece of rope length, ft

F + S + T = 120
 where: F = 2*S
           T =3*S
substituting into eqn,
2*S + S + 3*S = 120
6*S = 120
S = 120/6 = 20 ft

Michael P.

Therefore, the longest piece is the largest multiple of S which is T, the third piece of rope

T = 3*S = 3*20 ft = 60 ft
