 Micheal drives 143 miles from town A to town B in 2 hours and 36 minutes. He then drives from town B to town C at the same speed and takes him 21 minutes

 

A. Workout Micheals average speed from town A to Town B

B.  How far did Micheal travel to Town A to Town C

Part A)

 

36 minutes = 36/60 hour = 3/5 hour

 

rate of speed = distance/time = 143 miles  divided by 2 and 3/5 hour

 

                                             = 143 miles divided by 13/5 hour

 

                                            = 143 * 5/13 mph 

 

                                            = 55 mph

 

Part B)  distance = rate of speed x time

 

    21 minutes = 21/60 hr = 7/20 hr

 

   distance from town B to town C = 55 mph x 7/20 hr = 19.25 miles = 19 and 1/4 miles

 

Distance from town A to town C is 143 + 19 and 1/4 = 162 and 1/4 miles
