How about:
x = (1/2)x + ___ as 1st step... we have a variable on both sides of
the equal sign, and one fractional coefficient.
Now subtract the (1/2)x from both sides
x - (1/2)x = ____
(1/2)x = _____
We want x to be -6 so:
(1/2)(-6) = -3 so that is the number that should still be on the right side of the equal sign.
Final equation: x = (1/2)x - 3
Solving this to check:
x - (1/2)x = -3
(1/2)x = -3
x = 2(-3)
x = -6
