Question

a total of 228 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. The number of student tickets sold was two times the number of adult tickets sold. How many adult tickets were sold?

Let's a be  the number of adult tickets and s the number of  student tickets. It is given that s+a=228 and  s=2a. Therefore

 

3a=228

 a=76 (adult tickets)

s=152 (student tickets)
