Don't worry about solving x. We are just writing a different expression that is equal to the one they gave us: x+3
If you look at your notes or the text provided by your class, the Commutative Property simply tells us that we can switch the order of things that are adding together.
- Think of your parents driving to work.
- They might have to get on the highway, go through traffic in the blistering sun, back and forth every weekday.
- That's what people call the Daily Commute
So when you think about
Commutative Property, think
Commute. All the numbers get to move and zip around
as long as they have the "road" of addition to connect them.
You've probably seen it before...
1+2+3 = 6
2+1+3 = 6
3+2+1 = 6
1+3+2 = 6
All those expressions add up to give you the same value of 6, the order doesn't matter. And that's something that we want to give a name, so we call it the Commutative Property.
To answer your question, another expression that is equal to the one that they gave us is 3+x
There are only four Properties for Addition, and they make math easy and fun. I highly suggest you memorize them like the back of your hand! Have a great weekend :)
