4x to the 4th power

The short answer is no, it doesn't cancel out.   The leading 4 means you have four of whatever follows.   The 4 in the exponent means you are taking x and multiplying it by itself four times.    
4x= 4*(x*x*x*x)
       = (x*x*x*x)+(x*x*x*x)+(x*x*x*x)+(x*x*x*x)
