Linear and simultaneous equations

Question

A rectangular container half filled with water has the dimensions that are 6 cm long, 5 cm wide, and 16 cm high.

 

A) When 16 metall balls each of volume x cm cubed and 8 metal cubes each of volume y cm cubed are dropped into the container, the container is 4/5 filled. Form and equation relating x and y.

 Volume is 6x5x16 = 480 

 

 Half is 240

 

4/5 is  384

 

 The volume of the metal balls and cubes is 384 - 240 = 144

 

 16X + 8Y = 144

 

  2X + Y = 18
