The tickets for a school show cost £2 for children and £3 for adults.

a) x tickets were sold to children and y tickets were sold to adults. The total money collected for tickets was £460. Use this information to write an equation involving x and y.

b) 190 people bought tickets for the disco. Write down another equation involving x and y.

a) x children's tickets at 2 pounds per ticket - 2x pounds for the children's tickets

    y adult tickets at 3 pounds per ticket - 3y pounds for the adults' tickets

Total money raised: 2x + 3y = 460

 

b) Assuming you meant to write "show" instead of "disco":

190 tickets sold: x + y = 190

 

Now, we can find y bu solving for the system of equations.

 

2x + 3y = 460

x + y = 190

 

Multiply both sides of the second equation by -2:

 

2x + 3y = 460
-2(x + y) = -2(190)

 

2x + 3y = 460

-2x - 2y = -380

 

Adding both sides:

 

y = 80, the number of adult tickets sold.
