Pronunciation and speech for native and non- native English speakers
Exactly 🙂 — you’ve got it. A dialectical journal is basically a two-column (or three-column) note-taking format. On one side you put a direct quote with the page number, and on the other side you record your response/analysis (sometimes a third column is for themes or literary devices).
I'll give you and example.
Here’s how to set one up for Lord of the Flies using quotes from the 1999 Penguin edition:
Here Is A Sample Dialectical Journal Layout. (Be sure to put the edition of the book you are using!)
Dialectical Journal – Lord of the Flies (Penguin 1999 Edition)
| Quote (with page #) | Response / Analysis |
| “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—” (p.16) | Shows the boys’ instinct to assemble and deliberate; an early attempt at democracy. Piggy suggests a system where everyone can be gathered and participate, similar to a town meeting. |
| “Let’s have a vote.” … “This toy of voting was almost as pleasing as the conch.” (p.21) | They choose a leader by voting. This mirrors democratic elections in adult society. The word “toy” shows their childish view of democracy — they like the process but may not fully grasp its seriousness. |
| “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking.” (p.31) | Establishes a rule to allow equal speaking time — a key democratic principle of equal voice. Conch symbolizes fair participation. |
| “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages.” (p.40) | Demonstrates the belief that civilization and democracy rely on rules. They equate rule-following with being civilized. |
| “And he won’t be interrupted. Except by me.” (p.31) | While setting up democratic rules, Ralph still reserves special power. Shows tension between democracy and authority. |
How to build your own
- Make two columns in a notebook, doc, or spreadsheet.
- In the left column, copy the quote exactly as it appears, with the page number.
- In the right column, write your reaction, connection, analysis, or interpretation.
- Do this for several quotes per chapter if you’re asked to do a “dialectical journal” for the whole book.
GOOD LUCK
