Subjects and Predicates 2: 7th grade Ela/English in Missouri

I am trying to help my 7th grader understand his homework.  I have been out of school to long.  

 

Blanchard successfully made the first human parachute drop in 1793.

 

Blanchard is the subject and parachute drop is the predicate. Where would the / (slash) go to

separate the 2?

 Every complete sentence contains two parts: a subject and a predicate.

Blanchard successfully made the first human parachute drop in 1793.

Blanchard= subject

made= verb

successfully= adverb (modifies verb)

drop= noun, dependent object

parachute= adjective (modifies drop, it's the type of drop)

successfully made the first human parachute drop in 1793 =  predicate (cannot stand alone without subject)

= prepositional phrase

Hello Laura,

 

In this sentence, the subject is "Blanchard," but the predicate is everything that follows, i.e. "successfully made the first human parachute drop in 1793."  You would put a slash right after "Blanchard" to separate the two.

 

Blanchard / successfully made the first human parachute drop in 1793.

 

A good rule of thumb when diagramming is that the subject-predicate division is a binary division of the entire sentence; that is, either a part of the sentence is part of the subject, or it is part of the predicate.
