A bag of flour weighs 2 pounds 5 ounce. You bag six bags. How much did it all weigh?

There are 16 ounces in a pound so you have

2 5/16 pounds of flour per bag with 6 bags...

 

6(2 5/16) = 6(37/16) = 13.875 pounds

 

(0.875 pounds)(16 oz/lb.) = 14 ounces

 

13 pounds 14 ounces of flour

You could also do it this way:

 

6(2 pounds 5 ounces)

= 6(2 pounds) + 6(5 ounces)

= 12 pounds + 30 ounces

 

(30 ounces)(1/16 pounds/ounce) = 30/16 ounces = 1 pound 14 ounces

 

Total:  12 pounds + 1 pound 14 ounces = 13 pounds 14 ounces
