The area of a rectangle is 63ft squared and the length of the rectangle is 5ft more than twice the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle

I need to find the length and width of the recand they are both in feet. I need to find the dimensions of the rectangle

Let  w = width of rectangle

  so, 

    (2w + 5) = length of rectangle

 

Area of rectangle = (length)*(width)

   63  = (2w + 5)(w)

      2w² + 5w - 63 = 0                       [put all terms on left]

   (w + 7)(2w - 9) = 0                     [either factor or use quadratic formula]

 Either w=-7 or w=4.5                   [Multiplicative Property of Zero]

       w=-7 is not possible, so w=4.5 ft

 

Thus, length = 2(4.5)+5 = 14 ft

 

Check:     4.5 ft  x  14 ft  =  63 ft²
