A water tank has a leak. Each hour it loses 5 liters of water.

Determine which of these statements can be used to find the water the tank lost over time.

Answer Choices

A. Let w=5×t where w represents water lost and 5×t represents the product of the rate per hour and the amount of time for which water is lost.


B. Let w=5−t where w represents water lost and 5−t represents the amount of time .


C. Let w=5÷t where w represents water lost and 5÷t represents the rate per hour.

Eddie, I suggest that you try out each of the proposed answers, using t = 1 hour and t= 2 hours, and then see if the loss values w make sense in each case.

 

You do know that when t=1, the loss is w=5 and when t=2 the loss would be w=10. You even know that if t=0, w=0 (no loss in zero hours).  This will enable you to find the correct answers, A, B or C.
