The cost of 8 muffins and 2 quarts of milk is $18. The cost of 3 muffins and 1 quart of milk is $7.50. How much does 1 muffin and 1 quart of milk cost?

Let x = the cost of one muffin

Let y = the cost of one quart of milk

3x + y = 7.50      y = 7.50 - 3x

8x + 2y = 18

8x + 2(7.50 - 3x) = 18

8x + 15 - 6x = 18

2x = 3

x = $1.50

y = 7.50 - 3(1.50)  = 7.50 - 4.50

y = $3.00
