One of the number is eight decreased by two times an another number. If their sum is 40 then what are the numbers?

n and m are the numbers.

 

n = 8 - 2m

n + m = 40

 

(8 - 2m) + m = 40

8 - m = 40

m = -32

 

n = 8 - 2(-32) = 72

X = 8 - 2y

X+y = 40

 

8 - 2y + y = 40

 

8  - y = 40

 

-y = 32

 

y = -32

 

x = 8 - 2*-32 = 8 + 64 = 72

 

72 is 8 - 2*-32 = 8 + 64 

 

Their total is 72 + -32 = 40

 

The numbers are -32 and 72
