Water rationing.

On an island many houses have running water from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. During those hours Mike fill several containers of different sizes with water which his family will use for the day one afternoon Mike did exactly 4 liters of water if he had an 8 liter container filled with water and two empty containers of 5 and 3 l how can he measure exactly 4 liters of water by using the containers

     8                                  0                          0                    start. fill 5 gallon container from 8 gal to get

     3                                  5                          0                    fill 3 gal container from 5 gal to get

     3                                  2                          3                    pour3 gal into 8 gal to get

     6                                  2                          0                    pour2 gal from 5 gal into 3 gal to get

     6                                  0                          2                    fill 5 gal from the 6 gal in the 8 gal container to get

     1                                  5                          2                    dump the 1 gal from the 8 gal container to get

     0                                  5                          2                    pour 2 gal from 3 gal container into 8 gal container to get

     2                                  5                          0                    fill 3 gal container from 5 gal container to get

     2                                  2                          3                    pour 2gal from 8 gal into 5 gal container to get

You now have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container, 3 gallons extra and wasted 1 gallon by pouring it out.
