Hallie has 10 times more than x which can be written as 10x

The sum of the pages they have to read is 264 so:

(Janet's pages)+(Hallie's pages)=264

x+10x=264

11x=264

x=24 so:

Janet has to read 24 pages and Hallie has to read (10)(24)=240 pages

To check:

Janet+Hallie=264

24+240=264
