An ice cream shop owner hires a clerk and informs him that the mean weight of scoops of ice cream should be 50 grams. The clerk weighs out seven ice cream scoops with the following weights in grams: 52, 51, 50, 43, 48, 45, and 44. How many grams of ice cream should be added to the smallest of these scoops to obtain an average weight of 50 grams for the seven scoops?

Answer 1

Some are over 50 g and some are under 50 g.

Over:  52 (+2);  51 (+1);  50 (0) = +3 g

Under:  48 (-2);  45 (-5); 44 (-6);  43 (-7) = -20 g

So there is a 17 g deficit (+3 and -20 g)

Add 17 g to smallest scoop to make up the difference.

Then you have 52+51+50+60+48+45+44 = 350 g and divided by 7 = average of 50 g/scoop.
