What is -2x+3y=9? I'm solving for y. My teacher says it's literal equations.

-2x+3y=9      z-c/c=d

Arturo O.

What is a "literal equation"?  I think you meant to say "linear equation".

The equation

(z-c)/c = d

is irrelevant to solving for y.  Mark gave you the solution for y in terms of x, which is all you can get without a second, independent linear equation in x and y.

A literal equation is an equation that involves two or more variables.  So, the given equation is both linear and literal.

I never heard that term, but I take your word for it.

I'm sorry I meant z-y/c=dc

Mark,

The student just changed the problem (see last comment above), so now we need y(x,z)!

Arturo, thank you for the explanation.

P.S.
To my knowledge, perhaps limited, "literal" only means containing letters (variables).
